Tuesday Treats: Down the Rabbit Hole

2 Mar

“Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, `and what is the use of a book,’ thought Alice `without pictures or conversation?’

Alice in Wonderland

What better book is there, that should be made into a movie? Especially with Johnny Depp? I was at Macy’s the other day and there was Alice stuff everywhere. They’re certainly planning to see this movie go far, and I’m sure it will. This chilling classic, has a lot to give…

Awesome ‘Stuff’

So, after peroosing the Macy’s stuff, I decided to peroose whatelse was out there, and what better place than Etsy? I found a lot of neat things, but these were the neatest, in my opinion. The piece features a real image from the original book. You can’t get more authentic than that!
if you love this as much as I did, visit her Etsy shop:

From Writing Books, to Making Books…

 Writing Books to Making Books…

In college I used to hand sew my own books. I miss the assembly, but I think since then I’ve found something with the same satisfaction, and joy. Recently, I’ve been designing book covers for other writers and I love it. I’ve done a business book for an entrepreneur/CEO in California called Iron Ambition, an Art book for a very intriguing project where artists interview artists, based off the blog Thinking About Art by J.T… My own books, both Moonlight Manor and Feather Book Series, and then some sample covers for wall-street guru’s and real-estate tycoons…

By literally quitting my job, I have found a whole new avenue. After writing my first book, I knew that making and designing signs for the University in a tiny office with no windows, was not for me. Deciding to cut down on my hours at the University was a heavy decision, especially when I was on the cusp of getting a mortgage for our the house I had been remodeling for over two years. I lost the dream health coverage, and the security that the job brought, but what I’ve found is that in the two months since, I have built a career outside of that place, with little effort and all the talent I could give.

I was wasting my talent at the University, literally flushing each great idea down the toilet, with no hope of advancement. When I first started there, I worked my tale off, but like most state jobs, you realize there is no point in being an over achiever beyond earning a lame slip of paper that says you are employee of the quarter (I was nominated twice and won once) After I won, I was a little bummed. Where did that get me? NOWHERE…

I feel that the freelance I am doing now is gratifying, self-fulfilling, and certainly more entertaining. I have my small office in the basement, it’s warm, cozy, my cat’s visit on a regular basis, and I can exercise, do laundry, bake bread, clean, and run errands while I send artwork to be approved and changed by my clients.

Freelance isn’t for everyone, I believe you really have to have the mind for it, and the talent. I work weekends, because I love to work, and the schedule is all mine. Being busy makes me feel alive, gets my blood pumping, and my mind out of the negative…

Needless to say, I love it, and I’m glad I made the leap, and took the chance.

And my mortgage got approved 😉

MORE snow…

5 Jan

I actually braved going to work today, through at least a foot and a half of fresh snow, but at that height, your car acts like a pin ball between drifts, so it’s no that bad. Someone from Australia bought an e-book from me and I was jealous. I mean, IT’S THE MIDDLE OF SUMMER THERE! I remember how that was, nice sandy beaches and warm water…

Ahhh… Maybe I’ll have to go back one day

A Double Divorced Family Christmas…

1 Jan

My family is not divorced, but being recently married, the holidays seem challenging enough for me, let alone my friend whom has recently been engaged and both, her side, and her fiance’s side, are double divorced…

That’s a big family. I’m bringing it up because today she is attending her eighth “Christmas” and I can see the disdain in her eyes. She is DONE with the holiday, not to mention having to buy gifts for all those people.

For heaven’s sake, they need to come up with some sort of system, or at least learn to get along for one day out of the year. Which I understand is a lot to ask, especially if the circumstances are unsavory.

My heart just goes out to all those families out there with multiple Christmas’s, toppling the average “two” we typically have…

The upside is, she has a ton of gift cards, and I love gift cards. THAT, and they got two copies of Mama Mia, Hitchcock, and Batman, that means I score the duplicates! YAY…

I’m a little concerned my deck will fall off…

1 Jan

I hope everyone had a lovely night, I had fun, ordered Chinese, had champagne, ran the gamut of typical new years eve traditions, except I kicked ass playing Wii bowl…

Anyways, my point. My computer sits next to a window that looks out on my deck. I still have my tomato plants out there, what can I say…I’m lazy. BUT the deck has about 3 feet of snow on it, I wish I could show you, but I haven’t found my iphone yet today…

It’s also still snowing, and the wet heavy kind. But I suppose I was going to get the deck replaced ANYWAYS, so if it falls off, insurance  will pay for it. There’s also an old futon out there, now I really feel like a pack rat, but I actually keep a rather clean house, it’s just that I’m remodeling…

anyways, just thought I’d voice my concerns for my deck…

The Best Flash Website Ever! This is so cool! and it’s a game!

25 Dec

I was searching flash sites for my dads adventure company, showing him the possibility’s that are out there and I came across this site.

It’s like watching the latest Pixar flick, and I can’t get enough of it! It’s a game, where the outcome is your choice… who knew milk was so fun!

its the “Got Milk” advertising campaign. amazing!

Christmas is here…time to be depressed!

25 Dec

Christmas day used to be exciting, when you were a kid. But now I see it as the mark of a new time. A time where the delightful Prozac pumped carols cease to echo through the streets, the snow just seems messy and inconvenient, and the christmas lights no longer look beautiful, but tacky.

I know, I could say that I should wait to feel all depressed until after the roast beast. But I don’t want to, inevitably tonight will come, and the dawn will bloom depression…

It’s all over. Time to get excited for Vlentines Day (wince)… I suppose.

Bad Luck For Sale…A Series of Unfortunate Events…

22 Dec

     My true story…

My dad laughed as we drove to the hospital.

“Dad, you’re a real life version of ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events.’ Its so strange,” I said, but he didn’t even care anymore.

“You should make me a website where I can sell hexes,” he joked.

He had long forgotten that my brothers car had been stolen in Detroit early last year. He had tried to put the plane crash behind him, convincing himself daily that the two deaths weren’t his fault. He had not been the pilot, just a partner. When my mom was rear-ended by a transfer semi only a month ago, he had called me with a calm tone to his voice, as though seeing her go to the hospital on a stretcher was just another day in the garden, just another fractured neck.

And now, as the long weekend came to a close, with no water because of frozen pipes, he slipped and fell in the driveway. My husband hadn’t expected how my dad would react when he found him laying on the hard ground, eating snow.

“What should I do?” he asked, looking at him with grave concern, expecting that by now, he’d be at his utmost breaking point.

“Go up to my room,” he breathed, a straight look on his face. He was still sprawled on the ground, grasping his ankle, “And go under the bed. You’ll find my gun there, with two loaded clips. Shoot me.” He laughed then, and my husband couldn’t help but laugh also.

My dad was a warrior, a stronger man then my mom made out. I rushed to the car as my husband pulled from the drive on his way to the hospital, my dad happily bundled in the front seat.

“I guess the year really isn’t over dad,” I chuckled. Just yesterday he’d wondered what more could possibly happen this year. You would think it was over, especially as water flooded the bathroom earlier today. Enough bad luck for one family, but now a broken ankle had been added to the list.

“Put it this way, you’ve gotten a life’s worth of bad luck out in one year. Now the rest have to be good.” My husband hit him playfully on the shoulder.

My dad choked on a laugh. “There’s still nine days left,” he said sceptically.

We dropped my dad off, my mom already waiting by the entrance. On the way home my car acts up, and I figure, shit happens…

This was a true story, this was my family, this year. I only hope things get better, but like my dad said, there is still nine days…

My mom is fine by the way, just a brace, and a painful chest. The plane crash was horrible, pilot error. But as I’ve learned, the best you can do is smile at life, when things happen, you can’t reverse it, so you may as well move forward and work to solve the problems.

So, does anyone want to buy some bad luck?
